Comprises 1 autograph letter from Black to an unnamed recipient dated 15 November (with a transcript), 1 autographed portrait photograph of him, 3 signatures, 1 of which is a facsimile by a bookseller dated 3 February 1887 advertising some of his novels, and a printed flyer by Sampson Low, Marston & Company Limited, London for cheap volumes of his novels with a photograph of him inset. The bound volume also contains a typescript biography of Black.

William Black was born in Scotland; his earliest ambition was to be a painter, but he had no success, and took to journalism. While working for London's Daily Star, he covered the Austro-Prussian war from the front, and was taken captive. Afterward, he continued to work in journalism while devoting himself to novels; he eventually became a popular success, notably for his adventure novels set in Scotland.
